Smart Grid Knowledge Center (SGKC) was established in collaboration with Ministry of Power to bring awareness and capacity building on application of smart grid technologies to utilities and other stakeholders in the power sector. Center inaugurated on 19th September 2018 by Hon'ble Central Energy & New and Renewable Energy Minister. It is equipped with models working on Smart Grid technologies including state-of-the-art training infrastructure to provide hands-on training in this field. The center has already provided training to 500+ power sector professionals at national and international level.
The existing infrastructure infrastructure at SGKC provides for capacity building and hands-on training on the following functions:
Virtual/Virtual SGKC External Link Virtual SGKC is a digital-twin of SGKC, mimicking the features available at SGKC on a virtual online platform. Keeping in view the future digitization of SGKC facilities, an initiative was taken to create a virtual version of SGKC for wider dissemination of knowledge involving national and international stakeholders. Virtual SGKC Platform Main Designed to showcase smart grid solutions to DISCOMs and other power sector stakeholders. Various stakeholders can easily access/access these display facilities from anywhere in the world through internet. Other functionalities on Virtual SGKC likeIntegration of online conferences, trainings, webinars etc. is in progress. In addition, provision of physical infrastructure for technology demonstrations by various technology players is also under development at SGKC, Manesar.
In line with the vision of a self-reliant India and to establish SGKC as one of the Leading Centers of Excellence (CoEs); The next phase envisages the establishment of innovation parks and incubation hubs, promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, start-ups and participation in smart grid technologies at SGKC.Virtual SGKC has been developed jointly in collaboration with NPMU and MOP in coordination with POWERGRID, USAID. Enabling the development of modern-future ready-efficient distribution networks and operations is the core theme of SGKC.

Advanced Measurement Infrastructure
The existing infrastructure infrastructure at SGKC provides for capacity building and hands-on training on the following functions:
Functions installed and displayed are as follows: :
- Meter Data Acquisition System (MDAS)
- Meter Data Management System (MDMS)
- Smart Prepaid/Postpaid Meter
- Remote Load Limiting for Peak Load Management (DSM)
- tamper/alert detection
Idle Call/Outage Management System
The purpose of an outage management system is to improve the availability and reliability of power supplies, provide customer satisfaction and information, early warning for proactive maintenance to avoid outages and failures.
Real-life working models of Route Fault Indicators (FPIs), Distribution Transformer Monitoring Units (DTMUs), Automatic Repeaters and Sectioners are displayed.
AC Micro-Grid
A real life working model of AC microgrid has been established incorporating three solar PV technologies (monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin film), wind turbine, battery energy storage (lead acid and lithium ion) as energy sources.
The installed system helps to understand the following
- Comparison of functional performance of three different solar PV technologies
- Operation of microgrid in grid-tie and off-grid mode
- Functional behavior and performance of lead acid and lithium ion battery energy storage systems (BESS)
Smart Home/Home Energy Management System
Smart home energy management system enables the user to have complete control over the operation and power consumption of home appliances as well as optimum utilization of electricity, energy usage and bill amount Is. Users can schedule the operation of the devices.
Based on the tariff of the day, the smart home system installed at Manesar has additional functions like intrusion alarm, fire and gas alarm, artificial intelligence integration of all devices etc. All the features installed are available on mobile phone and can be accessed from anywhere with internet connection.
Direct Current/DC Micro Grid
DC microgrids can be used to supply power to remote areas where the electrical distribution network is not available or is highly unreliable. DC electricity generated from solar panels is used directly to power DC equipment.

Power Quality
With the help of power quality analyzer, current vibrations/harmonics and distortions produced by various electrical and electronic devices, especially various types of home lighting equipment, can be analyzed.
In addition to the above existing infrastructure, procurement of the following modules is in progress:
- Smart Grid Emulator System
- EV Charging Emulator and EV/EVSE Testing System
- Power Hardware in Loop (Phil) System
- Power Distribution Network Planning Simulator
- Real-time emulation of feeder automation using autoclosure, Smart Load Break Switch (SLBS), Smart Fault Isolation Device (SFID), etc.
