POWERGRID has been contributing to the society through its CSR interventions even before the CSR Act, 2013 came into force. POWERGRID has aligned with 15 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals launched by the United Nations in 2015. POWERGRID adopts 360° project approach for implementation of its CSR interventions thereby ensuring sustainable implementation of its CSR projects for the targeted beneficiaries. While designing and implementation of the interventions, POWERGRID consults and engages with all stakeholders. Techniques like, Need-Profile Analysis and Need-prioritization are used as effective community participation tools. Communities are also involved in the process of implementation as well as during participatory monitoring phases of the programs.

Support during COVID-19 Pandemic

COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc in the whole world. During the pandemic POWERGRID took up the responsibility of Mission Zero Hunger. POWERGRID activated all its establishments spread across the nation to distribute dry ration & meal packets to the needy in and around its establishments. PPE kits/ Masks/Gloves, sanitizers, etc. were distributed to Medical professionals, Police personnel, migrant laborers, etc to help them protect themselves from getting infected from the deadly virus. POWERGRID also extended financial help to State/District authorities for buying medical items/PPE kits and other essential items. POWERGRID extended help across the country from Leh to Kerala.

POWERGRID contributed ₹200 crore to PM CARES Fund in 2020-21 to support India’s fight against COVID Pandemic. In 2021-22 it has again contributed an amount of ₹75 crores to PM CARES Fund for Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations.

Despite facing severe challenges, POWERGRID have continued to operate with their restricted means, thereby also serving social welfare. While fighting against the COVID-19, some of the other notable initiatives undertaken by POWERGRID are as below :

  • 300+ cold chain equipment’s supplied to Ladakh, Mizoram, Punjab and Sikkim
  • Nitrogen cylinders converted to oxygen cylinders and given to nearby Hospitals.
  • Established Oxygen plant at Tau Devi lal Stadium, Gurugram & District Hospital, Jaisalmer

Shri V. K. Singh, Director (Personnel) POWERGRID handed over the medical equipments to Shri Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Counsellor, Leh, in august presence of Shri Ravinder Kumar, Secretary (Energy) Leh, Shri Kailash Rathore, Executive Director, NR-II, POWERGRID, Shri Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, DC, Leh, Shri Tarun Bajaj, Chief General Manager (Projects) POWERGRID and other senior officials of POWERGRID, Jammu Kashmir Power Development Department (JKPDD) and Health Department of Leh on 29.06.2021. On this occasion, Chief Executive Counsellor (Leh) flagged off vaccine delivery van, dedicated to people of Leh.

POWERGRID provided medical equipment & ambulances in various Govt. hospitals, distributed Aid & Appliances to Persons with Disabilities and organized health camps in various parts of the country. POWERGRID in association with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India Ltd (ALIMCO) distributed free assistive aids like Motorized Tricycles, Tricycle wheelchair, Walking Sticks, Brail Kit , Crutches , artificial limbs, and hearing aids to 188 Divyangjan ( PwDs) at Damoh District of Madhya Pradesh.

Improving Agriculture Productivity and Rural Livelihood in Kalahandi District of Odisha

POWERGRID has supported the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in developing a scalable site of learning to improve livelihoods and build resilience through integrated watershed management in 10 villages of Jaipatna block, Kalahandi district, Odisha. The watershed comprises an area of around 2500 ha. The overall objective is to develop capacity of the farmer in the region for improving rural livelihood through farmer friendly knowledge sharing and dissemination strategy to enhance awareness among different stakeholders about climate smart water efficient and nutritious cereals and vegetables for cultivating and its integration in regular diet.

Carrying out rural developmental works in Jalalsar village of Bikaner District, Rajasthan

With the construction of ‘pakka’ road the impact has been positive on the Rural Community. The villagers now found it easier for Commuting for school children, office going people, elderly and those who wish to access various services. Access to various public service centers is now faster than before. It is said that creation of infrastructure especially linking villages to highways and nearby cities has the potential to bring all out development of the village. The domains such as health, environment, safety and security are likely to get positively impacted by this intervention. At the same time the marginalized communities are also going to benefit in the long run.

20 Nos. of 120W (2Nos. X 60W) LED based Solar Street Lighting Systems on NH-16 at Kasibugga sub- division in Srikakulam District

POWERGRID made an Agreement with District Administration, Srikakulam for Supply, Installation and Commissioning of 20 Units of 120W (60W X 02Nos) of LED based Solar Street Lighting systems on NH-16 of Kasibugga in Andhra Pradesh. In absence of sufficient illumination, drivers and pedestrians are miserably failing to see the connecting approach roads, junctions, dividers and potential obstacles on road junctions during dusk and and night, which lead to road accidents many times. In order to address this issue  local authorities have requested to provide the illumination at identified places on NH-16 at Kasibugga Sub-Division Limits from Kotabommali to Ichapuram PS limits in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh

POWERGRID has undertaken some of the notable initiatives that are helping the women from rural India in realizing their potential.

Construction of hostel for working women at Mewat-Nuh Dist.

POWERGRID has constructed hostel for working women at Mewat Nuh for providing safer accommodation to the targeted group. The objective of the project is to encourage young women to take up career options, and become economically empowered. By providing suitable, safe and inexpensive accommodation to women coming from rural areas and looking for suitable accommodation away from their homes. It will also provide women safe and homely atmosphere at their work place.

Tailoring classes and distribution of sewing machines

To empower women and improve economic status of women and their families through business skills and education, POWERGRID have provided women with sewing machines and training on tailoring skills in Beed, Gurugram and Koteshwar. The main objective of this tailoring training program is to enhance the quality of life of women and teenage girls through enhancement of their skills and knowledge. This technical education is a means to eradicate unemployment among the unemployed women and provide them an opportunity to join vocational courses where they can learn skills and shape up their career that prepares them to earn a livelihood and support their families.

Installation of Sanitary napkin vending machines

The motif behind providing Sanitary napkin vending machines to women is to promote hygienic menstrual health of women and adolescent girls. This will discourage them against using traditional unhygienic methods. Aiming towards adolescent girls’ health and hygiene, sanitary napkin machines have been installed at various government schools at Firozpur under the aegis of POWERGRID CSR.

Training classes for 06 months in tailoring for girls and women : To improve the economic condition of the underprivileged women, Employment linked Skill Development programmes are continuously undertaken to provide them with self-employment opportunities. In this regard, POWERGRID has undertaken training programme on tailoring for the girls and women belonging to the weaker sections of the society. The main objective of this tailoring training program is to enhance the quality of life of women and teenage girls through enhancement of their skills and knowledge. They needed to learn newer vocational skills such as tailoring (sewing) which can help them earn more income and become economically self-sufficient and independent. This will alleviate poverty, help them support their family needs without being dependent of husband and parents. In order to help them, POWERGRID started free tailoring (sewing) training centers in the villages.

Training Programme for 275 nos. of unemployed youth, Damoh-CEDMAP : POWERGRID provided financial assistance to train 325 nos. of unemployed youths of Damoh District through CEDMAP (Centre for Entrepreneurship Development Madhya Pradesh). The duration of the programe was for 4 months, training course has helped the beneficiaries in fetching good employment opportunity to earn a respectable and dignified living.

Semi- Automatic Sanitary Napkin Manufacturing machines and 100 sewing machines at District Damoh : POWERGRID has provided 100 no. of high-tech sewing machine and 5 no. of semi- automatic sanitary napkin manufacturing machines to District Self Help Groups for installation through SRLM, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh under CSR. The machines have been installed at 5 different locations namely, CTC Aamchaupara (Damoh), Kishanganj (Pathria), Fatehpur (Vatiyagarh), Gaisabad (Hata) and Devdogra (Patera).

CIPET : A 6 - Month Certificate Course for Machine Operators on four different plastic manufacturing technologies Supported by POWERGRID under CSR Initiative with CIPET, IPT, Murthal is an exemplary CSR initiative of POWERGRID. The program is designed to support 160 youths from underprivileged backgrounds comprising SC, ST, OBC, EWS candidates, free of cost, with an employment assurance of 70%.

Tree Plantation : Considering the ecological concern, a number of CSR initiatives are undertaken by POWERGRID. Tree plantation drive has been carried out at several locations by POWERGRID owing the benefits attributable to tree plantation, since it helps in reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and reduces the effects of flooding. Some of the notable plantation drives carried out by POWERGRID across the country are :

  • 50000 saplings at Kokrajhar
  • Plantation activities at Naya Raipur, Chattisgarh
  • Plantation of 1000 trees at Gurgaon
  • Tree Plantation under Hariyar Chhattisgarh
  • Tree plantation along with tree guard in Auraiya

Promotion of Solar Energy : Compared to conventional energy sources such as coal, gas, oil and nuclear - reserves of which are finite - clean energies are just as available as the sun from which they originate. Approx. 3439 nos. of Solar lights have been installed by POWERGRID across different States of India. Some of the notable places where Solar lights have been installed are Balia, Mau, Bhadoi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Chandauli, Baghpat, Ghazipur, Saharanpur, kushinagar, Srikakulam, Trichy, Jaggampetta, Jodhpur and Damoh. With the CSR intervention from POWERGRID it has been experienced by the rural masses that enhanced street lighting system in remote and rural communities can actually improve road safety, personal security and raise the standard of living. And it is also expected that with the introduction of proper Lighting through Solar lights, the crime rate also gets proportionately down.

Restoration of lakes in Aurangabad and Rohtas Districts : Most of the population in the district of Aurangabaad and Rohtas depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Ground water scarcity is major challenge in both the Districts. The areas are fertile but they lack proper irrigation facility. POWERGRID excavated and renovated the existing 20 ponds/lakes in the districts of Aurangabad and Rohtas and helped farmers to reap maximum benefits from agriculture.

Some of the key initiatives under Education

Munderi Smart classroom, Kerala

POWERGRID modernized the school by undertaking general renovation, provided furniture, constructed new class rooms for +2 students and upgraded the existing class rooms to smart class rooms. The students are from the rural background whose parents are mostly dependent on agriculture.

Supply of Desk Bench to Govt. School in Salem, Tamil Nadu

Through, this CSR initiative of POWERGRID it was expected that the students can attend the classes comfortably and with utmost interest once the School reopens post COVID-19. This has encouraged the rural masses to send their child in greater numbers thereby helping in strengthening and enhancing the literacy rate of Salem district.

Construction of Classrooms, toilets & infrastructure development work in Government Schools

The project was introduced with the intent to reduce dropouts of girl students in schools due to lack of Sanitation and Hygiene. The Schools devoid of basic infrastructure. Under the CSR initiative of POWERGRID, basic Infrastructure has been developed in these Schools. POWERGRID has handed over gender-segregated toilets to the Schools helping students continue their schooling with dignity and confidence.
